Overview

The Xaayda Gwaay Ngaaysdll Naay/Haida Gwaii Hospital and Health Centre (XGNN/HGHHC) opened in 2016 and is a 16-bed facility serving the communities of southern Haida Gwaii. It provides 24/7 emergency care, inpatient and residential care, and a full suite of out-patient services. Low risk obstetrics is provided in a midwifery-led model with physician support. The site emphasizes a supportive, mentoring culture for learners and practitioners, with regular skills drills and CME luncheons. XGNN/HGHHC is a teaching site for the UBC Faculty of Medicine, with teaching and mentoring responsibilities for medical learners including family practice residents and undergraduate medical and nurse practitioner students. Haida Gwaii consists of approximately 150 islands off the northwest coast of British Columbia, with Daajing Giids as the largest community on Graham Island, serving a population of about 2,500 (roughly 50% Haida by ancestry).
