Position Overview

Mental Health Addictions Clinician (AOD SBIRT) – Rotorua Hospital Emergency Department, Permanent, Fulltime (40 hrs per week). Rostered shifts Monday to Sunday. The role is part of an innovative Emergency Department–based model to provide screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment for alcohol and other drug (AOD) needs, focusing on methamphetamine harm reduction.

Responsibilities

• Provide specialist alcohol and other drug assessment, brief intervention and referral to treatment for patients presenting to the ED.
• Respond to referrals generated through triage screening and deliver timely, person‑centred interventions in the ED and inpatient wards.
• Engage patients in culturally safe, motivational conversations and support them to reduce substance‑related harm.
• Coordinate referrals to community‑based services, including kaupapa Māori providers and NGO partners such as Manaaki Ora.
