Position Overview

Position Summary

Canadian society has not escaped the increasing polarization of ideas and values that has risen in most liberal democratic societies. Are our democratic institutions capable of providing meaningful opportunities for representation, participation and inclusion for citizens in these challenging domestic and international environments? Many of our traditional institutions (legislatures, courts, political parties) were not initially structured to handle these demands. This course will examine the many demands placed on our public and social structures to provide meaningful opportunities for public engagement. What changes and additions to our present political framework are necessary for Canada to successfully navigate these obstacles in a free and democratic society? This course will explore the hurdles, the opportunities and the readiness of the state to successfully engage citizens during these challenging times.
